work, accidents and (a) Cataclysm

While a lot of you, especially those in Greece were still in some sort of holiday, whether it was sitting on an island beach or enjoying the still empty Athens, this past week was once again crazy for me. It continued the pattern of this summer with work, more work and some surprises.

In real life, I had the scary experience of getting hit by a car while crossing the road on Thursday afternoon. Although I did not get totally run over, and thank God I am not injured apart from some bruises and some aching muscles, it did put a different perspective to things. My thermos flask which was in my bag, stood between my upper leg and the car and took most of the impact. Every time I see its mangled shiny body I think how lucky I am that it’s not my leg that got shattered. I’m keeping this thermos as a reminder of the incident, so when I get all crazy and stressed about life, work etc I can look at it and re-evaluate my priorities.

At work I was in the happy position to put the finishing touches to a couple of projects that I’ve been working on for the last month and a half, one of which I consider to be my baby since it was a redesign of nearly the first project I ever worked for when I joined bluestorm a couple of years ago. I’m quite looking forward to getting them both live soon and talking about them a bit. I had the opportunity to use the new Rails I18n functionality in one of my multilingual projects and got more into hpricot, both of which made for some very very interesting research and development as well as some very satisfying results.

In other news, Blizzard once again got my inner geek unbelievably excited with the official announcement of Cataclysm last night at Blizzcon. The cinematic trailer is once again awesome making me wish they would follow that format for the upcoming World of Warcraft movie that was announced recently. All the new content looks absolutely amazing, but I think the things that spoke to me more than anything else are the changes in Azeroth and the old school content that has been brought up to new heroic standards. New life being breathed into the, mostly abandoned, old world? Heroic Shadowfang Keep? Deathwing?! Well yeah! So looking forward to the expansion’s release as well as finding out the details in the weeks till the final release.

With this I will leave you to go out and enjoy the sunshine as I don’t know how long it will last with me living in England. You gotta make the most of it.
