working from home vs working at the office

Today I took the opportunity to work from home, something that I don’t do very often, but absolutely had to be done in order to make some significant progress in what I am currently working on. Like every other time I do this, I woke up early, had my morning coffee ritual and then started working. Since then I managed to zone out and focus at the huge task list at hand without significant interruptions. I finished at 5.30 this afternoon, having probably done about twice the amount of work I get to over any other day.

Walking to the supermarket earlier (being extremely hungry, which was a mistake by the way), I got thinking about how much I enjoyed myself today as well as how much quality time I spent with my work. I loved being able to zone out completely with no interruptions, no people chatting away or asking questions, or clients to appease. It was great waking up in the morning and making fresh coffee with no task juggling and no stress about the ticking clock. Nice not to have to get on two buses and walk in the cold to get to the office. Most of all it was fun being able to dabble with ruby and jquery, write some html and CSS and do what I like doing best, make websites.

However much I enjoyed this, I’m not quite sure if I would be able to do this everyday. I like going to the office, enjoy the banter, the music (and the occasional elevator music) played through our itunes. I occasionally even enjoy interacting with clients, trying to decipher what they want or what they mean in their latest cryptic email. I only wish I was able to write more code over other stuff I do in a addition to coding.

On the other hand maybe I should stop bitching and enjoy more the aspects of it that I like and take it easy(-ish) when things become a little stressful. Much more difficult than it sounds but what the hell, I’ll give it a try. After all when the going gets tough the tough get going.

As for the rest of today, TGIF, the weekend has begun.
